One of if not the best autobiographies that I’ve ever read。 Charting Chaplin’s career and life is a fascinating process and takes you through film history as well as world history。 He’s a great writer and doesn’t shy away from some of the rougher elements of his life。

قصة حياتي لـ شارلي شابلن قصه حياتي هي سيره ذاتيه لشارلي شابلن على هيئة مذكرات يحكي فيها بنفسه مواقف حدثت معه وكيف أصبح من أشهر الشخصيات في العالم واهم فناني الكوميديا في أمريكا بل في العالم كله، يظهر من خلال المذكرات كيف انه هو وأسرته ذاق طعم الفقر وهو ما ظهر في أفلامه فيما بعد كمحاكاة للأوضاع الاقتصادية والسياسية أيضا في البلاد آنذاك。 دوماً ما يخالجني الخوف من الاطلاع على سيره ذاتيه لشخص هو الذي كتبها بنفسه، لسبب لا اعلم مدي اهميته لغيري ولكنه مهم لي بكل تأكيد وهو خوفي من ان يكون الحديث عن النف قصة حياتي لـ شارلي شابلن قصه حياتي هي سيره ذاتيه لشارلي شابلن على هيئة مذكرات يحكي فيها بنفسه مواقف حدثت معه وكيف أصبح من أشهر الشخصيات في العالم واهم فناني الكوميديا في أمريكا بل في العالم كله، يظهر من خلال المذكرات كيف انه هو وأسرته ذاق طعم الفقر وهو ما ظهر في أفلامه فيما بعد كمحاكاة للأوضاع الاقتصادية والسياسية أيضا في البلاد آنذاك。 دوماً ما يخالجني الخوف من الاطلاع على سيره ذاتيه لشخص هو الذي كتبها بنفسه، لسبب لا اعلم مدي اهميته لغيري ولكنه مهم لي بكل تأكيد وهو خوفي من ان يكون الحديث عن النفس مختلط بشيء من الرياء والزهو ليظهر الشخص نفسه في مذكراته على انه بطل خارق واجهته كل الصعاب التي وردت على المعمورة وتخطاها ايضا ليتجاوزها بقوته وجلده الغير معهود لبشري من قبله، ولهذا السبب اتجنب كثيرا قراءات السير الذاتية بقلم الشخصية نفسها، ولكن شئت ام ابيت يقع في طريقي كتب كثيره من هذه النوعية واقرأها لأسباب مختلفة。 اما هذا الكتاب ليس من النوعية التي اتحدث عنها من كتب السير الذاتية الغارقة في الرياء والزهو كالأيام لطه حسين، ولكنها من نوع اخر فكانت سيره ذاتيه لحياته المهنية بشكل كبير لم يذكر جوانب اخري من حياته سوي القليل عن زوجته وحبيبته ووالدته وأخيه ولم يذكر ويسترسل في باقي جوانب حياته الا القليل فكانت مثل سيرة مهنيه أكثر منها سيرة ذاتية。كيف لشخص عاصر الحربين العالميتين الاولي والثانية ومر بكل هذه الظروف المهنية والعنصرية أحيانا والاقتصادية ايضا ان يستطيع المحافظة على رباطة جأشه ويستمر في محاوله اسعاد الجميع وابهارهم حتى الذين اضطهدوه في فترة من حياته。 أفلام شارلي شابلن غنية عن التعريف بكل تأكيد، فلا اعتقد ان هناك من لم يشاهد شارلي شابلن من قبل، وحينما تحدث شارلي في كتابه قصه حياتي حول أفلامه وافكاره دهشت بأنه لم يكن مجرد فناناً كوميدياً يسعي لإضحاك الجماهير فحسب، بل في الحقيقة كان فنان كوميدي يحوي بداخله علي فيلسوف ومفكر كبير، كل من شاهدوا أفلام شارلي لاحظوا بأن هناك رسالة او غاية حتى ولو كانت بسيطة بداخل الفيلم، وهو ما أكد عليه شارلي。الكتاب صغير فعلياً بالنسبة لكتب السير الذاتية المعتادة، ولم يعالج فيه شارلي شابلن جوانب اخري في حياته بشكل كبير سوي حياته المهنية، فلم يروي ظمئي ولم يخمد فضولي ولكنها كانت تجربه ممتعه بعض الشيء ان تغوص في عالم شخص اخر حتى ولو كان محدوداً للغاية。 التقييم العامثلاثة نجوم من أصل خمسة نجوم。 。。。more

Bottomline: Unexpected joy to read。 Open and thoughtful accounting of his life。 I am a fan of movies and even what I consider "older" movies （think 1960s Doris Day！） but didn't really know much about silent films。 I've seen a handful randomly but never really enjoyed one or thought much about it。 As I was looking for a new biography I grabbed this at the library。 I didn't know much about his life but knew who he was。 I was blown away by this book。 It is written very plainly and openly about his Bottomline: Unexpected joy to read。 Open and thoughtful accounting of his life。 I am a fan of movies and even what I consider "older" movies （think 1960s Doris Day！） but didn't really know much about silent films。 I've seen a handful randomly but never really enjoyed one or thought much about it。 As I was looking for a new biography I grabbed this at the library。 I didn't know much about his life but knew who he was。 I was blown away by this book。 It is written very plainly and openly about his life。 He has pages about an encounter with a famous writer but only a few sentences about his wives and almost nothing about his children。 So it is a unique accounting from his perspective。 The book is mostly focused on his upbringing and then his career in the film industry。 I enjoyed it immensely。 It gave me another perspective on Hollywood's olden days。 And it was a fun look at what American politics were like back then。 I really enjoy his cadence and he uses fabulous vocabulary thought out the book。 I looked up maybe 15 words。 He describes places that made me want to look them up too！ This is almost a motivational book in that he boldly goes after his goals。 It makes you want to as well。 Its a big book and not particularly fast paced but worth the time。 。。。more

Why would one pore over an autobiography about someone who has never really been attracted to the reader。 In the past， I have never had any inclination to watch any Chaplin performance or indeed read any material about him。 It is only recently that having heard his wonderful speech in The Dictator， any form of interest has been sparked。Nevertheless， I have read his autobiography and with hand on heart， I am able to report it has been an absorbing read。 This is the traditional 'rags to riches' st Why would one pore over an autobiography about someone who has never really been attracted to the reader。 In the past， I have never had any inclination to watch any Chaplin performance or indeed read any material about him。 It is only recently that having heard his wonderful speech in The Dictator， any form of interest has been sparked。Nevertheless， I have read his autobiography and with hand on heart， I am able to report it has been an absorbing read。 This is the traditional 'rags to riches' story of a desperately poor individual reaching great financial heights。 How he finds how valuable his talents are; spurring him in uprooting himself to travel to his ultimate destination of success。My one criticism of this autobiography is the great man's timing。 Reading from a purely historical perspective， and as a self proclaimed historical purist， I found myself， at times， a little lost in Chaplain's historical context。 Reading seminal events that he experienced and the huge historical characters that he was endlessly meeting， I found myself struggling to locate the time in which these events took place。 Annoyingly， he hops from one era to another without any warning。 So although this book is an extremely enjoyable read it is not ideal for one soaked in a zeal like passion for correct histological chronology。 For me， however， the profound interest that I found in the book is that it really does manifest a side to Chaplin， that I didn't expect to discover。 A complete antithesis to the simple tramp character that made him the undisputed star of film in the early part of the 20th century。 He comes through as a tough， intelligent and hard nosed business man， with a technical skill that he dedicates a number of pages to illustrate。 This hard carapace is then transported into the later troubles he experienced。One thing that I need to explain to any potential reader is that this is a very erudite， at times beautifully prosed work， including some rather rare words that are not often used in the more 'modern' biographies，。 With this in mind， I would urge you to keep a dictionary nearby in order to truly enjoy this book。Even though this book was published nearly sixty years ago， it does have the twist of modern day commercialism。 Chaplin even gives us a prophetic view on science， which could have been written in our present troubled times， given a different theme。 In many ways this book gives us a template of success， let down and eventual triumph over adversity。 Not a complete 'feel good' book， but it is certainly in that zone。 。。。more
